In the Swing of Things at the Wachovia Championship
Golf fans everywhere tuned into the Wachovia Championship at Charlotte's Quail Hollow Club last May, as the world's top golfers competed for one of the largest purses on the PGA TOUR.
Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Phil Mickelson, and defending champion David Toms came to North Carolina to vie for the winner's share of the $5.6 million purse, but it was Joey Sindelar who took home the $1,008,000 prize and his first win since 1990. This year's purse has been increased to $6 million.
Tournament officials presented a $1 million check to the primary beneficiary of the charitable event, Teach For America. The teaching corps, Wachovia's national partner in remedying educational inequity, recruits outstanding recent college graduates to teach in urban and rural schools.
Last year's tournament proceeds allowed Teach For America to expand its presence in North Carolina, putting 51 teachers in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools last fall.
Tickets are still available to the 2005 Wachovia Championship, May 2-8 at Charlotte's Quail Hollow Club.
In its two short years the tournament has become one of the most prestigious sporting events in the Charlotte region. It was one of two first-year PGA tour events ever to give more than $1 million to charity. The Championship was recently profiled on an ABC special exploring the impact of PGA TOUR events, hosted by Sharon Stone and entitled "One From the Heart."
This year's Championship promises to be even more exciting as the world's top golfers vie to win this much-admired event. Tickets are available for this year's Championship, slated for May 2-8 at Quail Hollow Club. Live television coverage of rounds one and two will air on the USA Network, with rounds three and four airing on CBS Sports.
